The times we had…

Last weekend we had our first meeting after the Estonia trip. It felt good to see each other again and to talk about old memories. And we managed to have a couple of Estonian friends hanging out with us over Skype.

The times we had… However, we leaders thought that we shouldn’t get stuck, but move forward. So, Friday night was dedicated to learning something completely new, or actually rather old. Learning the basic moves to the dance halling. According to our instructor, Anders Borgehed, halling is apparently the oldest dance mentioned in a written source in Scandinavia. It was mentioned in court records from the early medieval times when two men challenged each others to dance the halling. One of them died!

The whole attitude of the halling; how to keep the body in a proud position, walk with a controlled posture, use the steps on every beat to bring energy into the movement and how to micro-improvise in a dance is the basics of all dances following the halling.

It took a couple of hours, but finally all of hour students started to get the hang of it. They even started to walk like halling dances going to dinner! Watch the movie…
